This is a full update and second edition of the Color Cube Volume 1 and 2. The boxes themselves are getting an update, and the palette cards have been reviewed and recategorized for a better experience.
Out of the original 500 palettes from the First Edition, 100 have been retired.
Alongside the new Volumes 1 and 2, the introduction of Volumes 3 and 4 gives more opportunities for better categories and variety, so any box has a huge range of colour choices on its own, without needing all 4.
There are a lot of other updates still to be announced, so it may be best to wait for the full launch before making a decision on which Color Cube is best for you.
Here’s the full breakdown of the changes to the palette cards:
Volume 1 (2nd Edition) keeps 160 from 1st Edition. I’ve moved 25 from Volume 2 (1st Ed.) and created 65 new palettes.
Volume 2 (2nd Edition) keeps 124 from 1st Edition. I’ve moved 15 from Volume 1 (1st Ed.) and created 111 new palettes.
Volume 3 (2nd Edition) includes 187 new palettes, plus 17 from Volume 1 (1st Ed.) and 46 from Volume 2 (1st Ed.).
Volume 4 (2nd Edition) includes 219 new palettes, plus 13 from Volume 1 (1st Ed.) and 18 from Volume 2 (1st Ed.).

Full disclosure: I may not have bought the Color Cubes for the “right” reason. Thing is, my budget is tight and art supplies are expensive. I spend months asking myself over and over if I really NEED to restock a supply, and it takes longer to convince myself to buy a new thing. Will I use it? Can I justify the expense? I wanted the first set of Cubes but talked myself out of buying them. When I saw the redesign, I just couldn’t resist any more and bought all 4. It’s more than 6 months of my art supplies budget, but not actually art supplies – shouldn’t I be buying paint, markers, or color pencils with that money? Then I got them. First off: are they “useful”? Yes. Hell yes. I’ve already used them more than I ever thought I would, from clothes styling to art projects to picking colors to repaint my house.
But if I’m being super-duper honest, I didn’t actually make the purchase for the “usefulness.” I bought them b/c the beautiful color palettes in the video were so much fun to look at. They’re just friggin’ gorgeous. Actually getting them and touching them? The dopamine rush is *intense*. I kinda want to lay all the cards on the floor and just roll around in them. They’re like candy. I have spent hours just flipping through them, looking at the pictures, daydreaming of art projects I’ll never make… is that “useful”? I don’t care. Is pretty. Makes me happy. :)
The quality, the hand-feel of the experience, adds to the joy. The boxes *feel* so good to touch, hold, open & close. The thickness and coating on the cards makes them a pleasure to handle. Such thoughtful details.
Are they “useful”? Yes, absolutely. Is that actually, honestly, way-deep-down the reason I bought them? No. Do I like using them in terms of functionality? 100%. Is the “functionality” the best part? NOPE.
The best part is the pure art-brain joy I get from touching and looking at them. Is that a marketable selling point? Probably not. Do I regret spending six months of art money on the set? No, I regret nothing, 10/10, would buy again. They make me feel like a 10 year old with my first box of crayons. If anything, I might take another 6 months of art budget and buy a set for a friend for Christmas, so she can feel this child-like joy, too.
A lot of art supplies are fun to use and make me feel like an artist. I don’t ever remember buying an art product that puts me in touch with the joy of color the way the Color Cubes do. Thank you, SRC. Thanks so much.

Beautiful product! Card’stock’ is of a nice weight: one or two can be fanned out to compare with your needs, and the cards do not wilt at all. The adjacant colours on the reverse help immensely.
